In the marine environment light is absorbed and scattered at incredibly shallow depths. Instead of relying primarily on visual cues, acoustic communication serves an important role in helping individuals maintain contact and make complex social decisions.
Research led by Dr. Laela Sayigh has demonstrated that each individual possesses a unique, distinctive signature whistle, much like a fingerprint or name. Through audio analysis in Raven, I expanded the Sarasota Dolphin Whistle Database, manually classifying 2024 call types from surveys.
